According to the US Department of Energy, cooling and heating account for more than half of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, representing one of the largest energy expenses for most households. Air conditioners alone consume about six percent of all electricity produced in the U.S., costing homeowners an annual total of approximately $29 billion. Consequently, around 117 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are emitted into the air each year. These statistics are just as alarming for commercial buildings.
In 2023, U.S. governors acknowledged window film’s significant contribution to energy efficiency in buildings through official proclamations. Once installed, window film may offer year-round savings of about 5 to 10 percent of the home’s total energy bill, according to the nonprofit International Window Film Association (IWFA).
